Lightlines: Mastering the art of the deal with Carousell

In Weiying Yeo’s home studio, several watercolour pieces sit in various stages of completion. The 28-year-old turned her hobby into a sideline business in 2017, when she discovered that she didn’t need a gallery to sell her work.

Carousell offered a ready – and free – online gallery for @lightlines.co, and its chat feature provided for the level of interaction and exchange she needed to get a commissioned piece just right.

She quickly found an audience for her customised watercolour pieces and 3D “pop-up” portraits. She also prints portraits on keychains and mugs. Her prices range from $7 to $150.

“It is a place where it is easy to interact with people, which is important because customised crafts require me to understand my customers,” she says, adding that she has built a base of regulars and cultivated first-time buyers.

Carousell Ads have also proven to be a handy way of increasing visibility, especially in capturing interest for her unique offering.

Her twice monthly use of Bumps usually result in a flurry of interest and enquiries, while “useful and user friendly” options like CarouPay streamline payments.

“Carousell has provided me with a supportive community and has enabled me to share my handmade and creative crafts, and to earn some money. I have met some really nice buyers and repeat customers, and knowing my pieces bring joy to them keeps me going,” she says, adding that she hopes to continue to grow her reach on Carousell and inspire other artists with her journey.
